North Bay Master Gardeners
The North Bay Master Gardeners started in 1989. Presently we are a small group comprised of fourteen members. This includes three new MGiT and we are looking forward recruiting new members this year. We are actively involved with local horticultural societies as quest speakers, responding to questions and answers, and providing demonstrations. We also participate in their flower sales and shows, providing help with identification of plants, insects and disease problems. We also act as consultants with the Heritage Gardeners. This summer we are planning to hold an education session at a member’s garden. In the past we have acted as judges for Communities in Bloom and to do so in the future. We have written newspaper articles, participated in radio shows and have also compiled a list of perennials suitable for zone four gardening. We are presently compiling a list of green alternatives to chemicals. The Independent grocery store pays for our hotline. In return we give advice during their spring flower sales. We are conducting PowerPoint presentations on different subjects and will catalogue all titles for future use. Our monthly meeting room is provided by the North Bay Public Library, where we include a small educational session. Sudbury Master Gardeners
The Sudbury group was formed in 1987. Last year the group's numbers increased significantly with the addition of a satellite group of six MGiTs in Espanola. SMGs conducted several clinics during 2008, including those at Earth Day, Azilda Botanix Greenhouses, Whitewater Greenhouses and Sudbury Horticultural Society meetings. We partnered with the Horticultural Society for plant sales in both the spring and fall at the downtown Market Square..
SMGs are proud of their partnership with the city’s Urban Landscape Committee, which resulted in the ‘makeover’ of the Queen Elizabeth schoolyard, the winner of this year’s Ugliest Schoolyard Contest. Using Master Gardener James St. John’s plan and guidance, and the generous contributions from local businesses, the hard working students, teachers and parents were able to transform their schoolyard into a greener, healthier space.
Members of our group also conducted seminars for the Sudbury Health Unit. During the year we have answered many gardening questions by telephone and individual consultation.
