Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc.

Technical Updating for Master Gardeners

Approved, March 20, 2009

Master Gardeners are expected to provide current and up-to-date advice and information to the gardening public.  In order to achieve this, Master Gardeners must engage in continuing education activities.

Requirements:  In order to remain current, each Master Gardener is expected to complete six (6) Continuing Education Units each year.  MGiTs are not required to complete CEUs during any year in which they take courses or are doing self-study to prepare for the Certification Exam.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are the measurement used to assess a continuing education event.  CEUs indicate an investment by a Master Gardener in continuing learning activities in order to remain current and to acquire new horticultural knowledge and skills.

 Guidelines

The focus of Continuing Education is on lifelong learning; all CEUs should be earned because learning occurred.

CEUs must be planned learning events or activities.

CEUs must provide information within the horticultural field that increases the depth and breadth of your  knowledge of some aspect of horticulture, making you a better-informed Master Gardener.

All CEUs must have a scientific/technical basis – for example travel tours or garden tours generally do not apply.

Travel, meals, etc., are not included in CEU time.
Events may be either volunteer or update activies, but not both.

Formal Technical Updates:
A group or a zone may host and organize a one-day Technical Update.  The host group will choose the theme of the update.  Technical Updates (TUs) have historically been the method by which most MGs have gained their continuing education.  These Updating days are valuable to MGs in many ways.  Zones and groups are encouraged to continue the practice of hosting Technical Updates.  The above guidelines for other CEU events govern TUs also.
