1. IPM – Using the Tools to Beat Key Ontario Pests: Phenology, Entomology, Organics.
Instructor:
Jason Leavens, B.Ed., B.Sc. (Agr.)
Assistant Superintendent, Niagara Parks School of Horticulture
Instructor/Curator of Plant Health Care and Plant Pest and Disease Diagnosis, IPM
Perhaps you have heard gardeners and farmers coin expressions such as “Plant corn when the oak leaves are the size of a squirrel’s ear”, or “Hey feller plant yer peas when daffodils and forsythia are yeller.” Are these associations fact, or are they part of age old “Green Thumb” folklore? Come join Jason in the continuing conversation of how phenological relationships aid in predicting, monitoring and controlling plant pests and diseases in the garden.
2. Tree Assessment (Structure Review, Hazard Review and Risks Assessment).
Instructor:
Darrell Bley
Instructor/Curator of Woody Plants
Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture
Trees are an important component of our urban landscapes. They are an investment for our future generations and we benefit from trees in so many ways. This workshop will teach us how to recognize the difference between trees that are structurally weak and trees that are structurally strong. We will categorize species of trees into structurally sound species and species that are inherently problematic. We will learn how to coach this problematic group into being successful long term members of the tree community. We will also review the International Society of Arborists “Hazardous Tree Risk Assessment” process which will allow us to review older trees and assess them based on specific criteria. This workshop will consist of classroom sessions which will help us learn the skills required for the outdoor sessions where we can practice our new assessment knowledge.
3. The Tiny Garden – Big Thinking for Small Spaces
Instructor: Jessica Bond, Hort Tech,B. Ed.
Instructor/Curator of Rose, Vegetable and Herb Gardens and Soil Science, Vegetable Culture and Annual Design
Come out and explore the world of small gardens. Learn how to incorporate the Principles of Design to develop a beautiful and functional tiny garden space. The workshop will focus on utilizing your garden area by concentrating on plant selection and garden design, container gardens and vertical gardening. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own containers and vertical gardens. Be prepared to get your hands dirty.
Fee:
The fee for this two-day workshop has remained at $250, as it has been for the past eight years.
